Medicine name: Cefazolin

Drug category: First generation cephalosporin antibiotics

Indications:

Gram-positive infections coccidiosis - cholecystitis - urinary tract infections (UTI)

Mechanism of action:

Through the seal of bacterial cell wall synthesis, it causes bacterial instability and creates a side effect of bacteria.

Pharmacokinetics:

The half-life of the drug is 90 to 150 minutes, it is metabolized in the liver and 80% of the drug is excreted intact in the urine.

Dosage Considerations – Should be Given as Follows:

Moderate-to-Severe Infections

0.5-1 g intravenously (IV) every 6-8 hours

Mild Infections with Gram-Positive Cocci

Adult: 250-500 mg intravenously (IV) every 8 hours

Mild-to-Moderate Cholecystitis

1-2 g intravenously (IV) every 8 hours for 4-7 days

Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infection

1 g intravenously (IV) every 12 hours

In adults and children with renal insufficiency, the dose should be adjusted by a physician.

Intramuscular injection: Dissolve the contents of 250 mg and 500 mg vials in 2 ml and 1 g vials in 4 ml sterile injectable water or 0.9% sodium chloride solution for injection and inject deeply.

Intravenous infusion: Dissolve the contents of 250 mg vials in 5 ml, 500 mg and 1 g in 10 ml of injectable sterile water and reconstitute the resulting solution with 50 to 100 ml of infusion fluid such as sodium chloride solution. Injectable solution of 5 or 10% injectable dextrose and 0.9% injectable sodium chloride solution, injectable ringer solution and infuse according to the prescribed dose for 30 minutes.

Contraindication:

Before starting treatment, the patient's history and possible allergy to cephalosporins and penicillins should be informed. People who are allergic to penicillin, penicillin derivatives or penicillamine may also be allergic to cefazolin. Cases of severe allergies and even anaphylactic reactions have been reported in penicillin-sensitive individuals after cefazolin administration. In case of allergic reactions, stop the injection and consult your doctor.

In case of severe diarrhea, avoid taking anti-diarrhea drugs and consult your doctor. In case of mild diarrhea and its continuation, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Warning:

In diabetics, administration of cephalosporins, including cefazolin, can cause a false-positive reaction to a urine glucose test with copper sulfate, or falsely indicate a higher urine sugar level than the actual amount. Consult your doctor before making any changes in your diet and medication dose.

If intramuscular injection of cefazolin with aminoglycosides such as gentamicin is required, these drugs should be injected at two separate points.

Follow the injection intervals set by your doctor exactly and complete the course of treatment.

Avoid mixing cefazolin with other drugs, especially aminoglycosides, for intravenous injection.

Drug interactions:

Concomitant use of this drug interferes with warfarin, heparin, enoxaparin, Argatroban and ethinyl estradiol. If taking at the same time, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
