Atorvastatin

(Blood lipid-lowering drugs -tablets)

medicine name: Atorvastatin

Drug category: Statins, lipid-lowering drugs

Indications:

Atorvastatin belongs to a group of drugs called HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, or "statins."

Atorvastatin is used together with diet to lower blood levels of "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL), to increase levels of "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL), and to lower triglycerides (a type of fat in the blood).

Atorvastatin is used to treat high cholesterol, and to lower the risk of stroke, heart attack, or other heart complications in people with type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, or other risk factors.

Mechanism of action:

It inhibits the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase in the liver, which plays a key role in cholesterol biosynthesis.

Pharmacokinetics:

It has a half-life of 14 hours, after absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, is metabolized by the liver and excreted in the feces.

The correct amount and method of consumption:

adults:

In the prevention of cardiovascular disease, 10 mg should be taken once a day.

In familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia, heterozygous and mixed dyslipidemia: initial dose 10 to 20 mg daily, then maintenance dose 10 to 80 mg daily.

For patients who need a large reduction in LDL (more than 45%) should start with an initial dose of 40 mg daily.

Lipid levels should be analyzed every 2 to 4 weeks after starting the drug, then the dose of the drug should be adjusted.

In homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia: dose 10 to 80 mg

children:

Heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia in children 10 to 17 years: 10 mg daily, dose adjustment is done by checking lipid levels every 4 weeks.
